DISTANCE EDUCATION LEARNING
Distance education is an effective method of reaching students in remote areas. It also promotes diversity in terms of program delivery.
There are two essential components to any distance education program delivery:
However, due to post office mail delay problems between the Maldives and many parts of the world, print-based delivery is not a viable option in our situation. As a result, we recommend restricting course delivery to the online option.
ONLINE DELIVERY: Online delivery means utilizing the widely-accessible resources of the Internet to deliver the program and course offerings. By utilizing this technology, students and instructors have the means to interact and exchange the information. The online learning option has unique benefits. For example, chat forums provide students with the opportunity to engage in discussions from a distance. As a result, common or unique problems that students have experienced in the past can be shared among the others who are currently experiencing similar problems.
Current online courses prepare students to complete Certificate and Two-Year Diploma programs in business-related programs.
Many of the Certificate and the Two-Year Diploma courses can be transferred toward the completion of a Three-Year Business Administration Diploma program. Provided students meet the required conditions, the Three Year Business Administration Diploma program courses can also be transferred toward the completion of a university degree such as Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com.) or Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA).
There are four stages in the Business Administration program that could lead to a university degree status. Most of the courses in the program can be completed online. The exit qualifications for each stage may be enough to open employment opportunities for students. For example, the completion of a One-Year Accounting Certificate program satisfy the qualifications for a Bookkeeper position.
THE FOUR STAGES: The four stages are as follows:
Stages 1, 2 and 3 are comprised of the Business Administration Diploma program currently offered at Algonquin College.
Stage 4 allows students to complete a program leading to a university degree designation such as a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) or Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com) through a number of universities with which Algonquin College has an articulation agreement. Algonquin College can also offer its own Applied Degree programs.
Click here for programs of study leading to certificates and diplomas that are available through the online program delivery option.
Stage 1 involves completing any of the certificate programs (listed below).
Stage 2 involves the completing of any of the available Two-Year Diploma programs offered at Algonquin College.
Stage 3 involves the completing of any of the available Three-Year Diploma programs offered at Algonquin College.
One can commence the fourth stage requirement by transferring acceptable credits from the first, second, and third stages of the certificate and diploma programs to any of the universities with which Algonquin College has an articulation agreement.
All of the courses in the first- and second-stage programs are available online. However, at the time of preparing this document (March, 2001), few of the third stage program courses, that is, few of the Three-Year Business Administration Diploma program courses were available online. However, they should all be available within the next twelve months.
UNIVERSITY DEGREES: After completing the first-year courses in the Three-Year Business Administration Diploma program, students who intend to continue and complete the fourth stage requirement leading to a university degree will be provided with information on the available universities through which they can complete their choice of university degree programs.
OUTREACH PROGRAMS: Special programs are available to help students who cannot afford computers and text books should they wish to follow a course through the online delivery option. In which case, computers and text books will be available in strategic locations for free use to those who cannot afford their own equipment and materials. These locations will be available in both mainland Malé and the Atolls.
REVIEW AND ASSISTANCE PRIOR TO FINAL EXAMS: All the online delivery courses have practice exams prior to the administration of the final course exams. In order for the program to experience a significant reduction in the rate of failures, special assistance will be available to students during the practice exam administration. This will ensure that all students are prepared for the final exams in all online courses.
REGISTRATION FOR COURSES: There are two options available to students, as follows:
Students who require assistance deciding which program of study to follow will be routed to a site for counseling prior to registering for a course.
Students who do not require assistance deciding which program of study to follow will be routed to Algonquin College program and course information and registration sites where they will follow instructions leading to course registration.
The program and course information sites are fully equipped with comprehensive information about every available online course (including information about costs and recommended text books). Arrangements are currently being made to provide text books at cost to Maldivian students.
All students must register through the Algonquin College registration website, so that we can verify the courses you intend to register for and confirm the portability of the courses toward the completion of other programs, such as a university degree program.
